Tips when using fertilizer
By Selvyn Evans
Recently I applied some fertilizer or Lawn Food to my lawn as it was looking dull. I used a bucket I found in my garage that has about 6 holes in the bottom. But this caused my lawn to burn in spots, as the fertilizer came out too heavy at times. The grass was burned even though the package clearly state-WILL NOT BURN LAWNS. A word of advice--do not depend on the promises on the package-use caution when spreading fertilizer. I was trying to be economical in using a no-cost spreader, but it will now cost me to patch the lawn with new lawn seeds. Nevertheless, I have a no-cost idea for my next spread. Get a cardboard box, punch holes evenly in the bottom. These holes should be just slightly bigger that the ferlilizer grains.Go up and down the lawn in the same manner as if I was using a lawn mower. Shake the carton slightly to release the grains. If by chance there is an excess spread in an area vacuum are rake and recover the excess.
