Less Common Ways to Improve Employee/employer Relationship

By Selvyn Evans

The intel that follows in not intended to be an authority on how to improve working relations at the work place. Indeed there are numerous books and internet articles on the subject. This work cites some of the lesser known approaches to relationship building at the work place. I have applied them while being employed as a Controller and Human Resource Administrator.

1) I was personally involved in orientation exercises whenever there was a new hire.
To improve employee/employer relationship I would follow up with new hires after they have been on the job for a while to see how they were progressing. If an employee was not under my direct supervision, this would not be my direct responsibility, but doing it demonstrated that the leadership was focused on employee comfort and success on the job.

2) Since I have control over all personnel records, I would note the birthdays of the children of the employees. The employee’s birthday was always remembered by the company, but remembering the children’s birthdays was ‘going the extra mile’ and was
always appreciated by employees.

3. I was not employed to help employees choose the stocks in their 401k accounts,
but I reminded them of prevailing market conditions, and set out the different investment approaches they can take as a result of the current conditions. The final decision was theirs, but the reminder and investment primer they received were much appreciated.

4. I found time to interact with most of the employees on my floor. Although they were
not all under my supervision, this demonstrated a sense of unity and fellowship.

5. At office picnics I tried to interact with any new hires to ensure they were
not left all alone, with no one to talk to. I can relate to my own problems as a young supervisor trying to blend with the executives at our company’s cocktail parties.

6. When we sat at lunch together, I connected with new hires to start a discussion that focused on their achievements. It is common knowledge that people find it easier to talk about themselves, and they always appreciate the fact that someone cares.

7. Payroll processing was my responsibility. If an employee is short-paid, the company’s standard procedure was to pay the shortage in the next payroll run. I usually cut a manual check and pay them the next day instead. The rationale was to prevent any employee discontent, so they could concentrate on goal achievement. They appreciated it.

Sometimes I would remain in office past my planned departure time, to allow some sales representatives to fulfill their quota, or to act as a support for the warehouse manager who was awaiting the return of his fleet of trucks after a day’s delivery. They expressed much appreciation.

Overall I always tried to find ways to make the employees comfortable. They are the most important assets in the company, and if they perform well, the company usually does well, and if nothing else, our jobs might be saved.

Thank you for sharing this employee/emplorer relationship advise, Selvyn. We all need to stop complaining and start serious relations, or our jobs will be headed overseas.
Successful employees, make successful companies and successful companies have successful employees. If they don't share in the success, everyone loses!!
Best to you.
